Historic Bloomington-Normal: Route 66 to David Davis Mansion

McLean County Courthouse and Museum

One of the region’s most all-encompassing and engrossing museums is located right in the old McLean County Courthouse! When you visit the McLean County Museum of History, you’ll be able to explore exhibits that paint a detailed picture of how the area’s people have changed in the last two centuries. The McLean County Historical Society, which cares for the courthouse and directs the museum affairs, was founded all the way back in 1892.

David Davis Mansion

With an origin story that goes all the way back to 1839, the David Davis Mansion just might be one of the oldest well-known historical sites in the Bloomington-Normal area! Sarah Davis and her husband, Judge David Davis, both maintained lifelong friendships with President Abraham Lincoln, and this restored mansion and museum tells their story. There’s no better place to go to see how the history of Bloomington-Normal intertwines with the history of the U.S.

Funk Prairie Home Museum

Ever wonder what life in Bloomington-Normal was like 150 years ago? You don’t have to play a guessing game; just visit the Funk Prairie Home Museum on the outskirts of town. This privately-owned museum features authentic furnishings that would have felt right at home in 1864, the year that this house was built.

Vrooman Mansion

If you’re planning a stay in Bloomington-Normal, you can give your visit a healthy dose of historical charm by booking a night at the Vrooman Mansion. This Romanesque mansion was built in 1869, and its current owners, who run a delightful bed and breakfast, have preserved the architecture with love and care.

Historic Route 66

Most people think of the 1860s when they picture historic Bloomington-Normal, and if you’re not careful, it’s easy to overlook a whole other century of our area’s history. Visitors to the area may not realize that Route 66 runs directly through both Bloomington and Normal, and those who are already on the route may not realize just how many things there are to do in our towns! The visitors center is located right in the McLean County Historical Museum.
